According to the properties and size (within the nanometer to micrometer range), self-assembled structures of amphiphilic polymers formed in solutions can be classi ed as colloids. Colloidal particles have been widely applied in many industrial products such as inks, paints, coatings, cosmetics, and photographic lms (Shaw, 1992; Hiemenz, 1986). Recently, a study on polymer-based colloidal particles has aroused broad interests in new areas such as drug delivery, biodiagnostics, and combinatorial synthesis (Xia et al., 2000). Monodispersed colloidal spheres have been widely used to construct 2-D and three-dimensional (3-D) ordered colloidal arrays (see, e.g., Cheng et al., 1999; Jiang et al., 1999a; Park and Xia, 1999; Dimitrov and Nagayama, 1996). The colloid-based materials can potentially be used in sensors, lters, optical switches, photovoltaic devices, soft-lithographic processes, and photonic band gap (PBG) materials among others (see, e.g., Xia et al., 2000; Joannopoulos et al., 1997; Weissman et al., 1996). Uniform colloidal spheres composed of the major types of functional polymers can further expand the functionalities of these colloid-based materials. Polymeric colloids with narrow size distribution can be obtained from emulsion polymerization and self-assembly of polymeric chains in solutions. Micellar aggregates of block or graft copolymers can be considered as one type of the colloidal particles with well-organized inner structure. The approach presented in this section

and K Honda, who used a n-TiO2 photoanode and a Pt counterelectrode From the band positions and the formal energy levels of the H + /H 2 and O2/H2O couples (Fig 559), it is, nevertheless, apparent that the cell: n-TiO2 |aqueous electrolyte| Pt (51025) does not provide sufficient voltage for photoelectrolysis of water (1229 V) since the energy level of hydrogen electrode at pH 7 is about 02 V above the conduction band edge (this difference remains constant also at other pH values since both energy levels show the same Nernstian shift with pH) The missing voltage has, therefore, to be supplied either from an external source (photoassisted electrolysis of water) or by immersing the electrodes into electrolytes of different pH values (photoanode in alkaline and cathode in acidic electrolyte, the electrolytes being separated by a suitable membrane).

Self-assembly of amphiphilic polymers generally refers to the micellar aggregation of the amphiphilic block or graft copolymers in the selective solvents It is well known that surfactant molecules can well organize to form micelles in solutions when the concentration is above the critical micelle concentration (CMC) (Shaw, 1992; Hiemenz, 1986) The micellization can be attributed to factors such as hydrophobic effect and the intermolecular attraction between the hydrocarbon segments Amphiphilic block and graft copolymers can be considered as polymeric counterparts of the low-molecular-weight surfactants (Halperin, 1987; Cantor, 1981) Various micellar aggregates have been prepared from block or graft copolymers through self-assembly of the polymeric chains in suitable selective solvents (see, eg, Kikuchi and Nose, 1996; Kabanov et al, 1995; Zhang and Eisenberg, 1995; Balsara et al, 1991; Wilhelm et al, 1991).

The direct photoelectrolysis of water requires that the ey level be below the O2/H2O level and the ec level be above the H + /H 2 level This condition is satisfied, eg for CdS, GaP, and several large-band gap semiconductors, such as SrTiO3, KTaO3, Nb2O5 and ZrO2 (cf also Fig 559) From the practical points of view, these materials show, however, other specific problems, eg low electrocatalytic activity, sensitivity to photocorrosion (CdS, GaP), and inconvenient absorption spectrum (oxides) The world-wide effort in photo(electro)chemical splitting of water started in the 1970s It was motivated by two factors: (1) the oil crisis which stimulated the research in the solar energy conversion, and (2) the optimism connected with the 'hydrogen economy'.

At present, however, the conversion of solar energy via photo(electro)lysis of water as well as the use of hydrogen as a medium for the energy storage and transport do not seem to compete seriously with the currently available energy resources 5105 Sensitization of semiconductor electrodes The band-gap excitation of semiconductor electrodes brings two practical problems for photoelectrochemical solar energy conversion: (1) Most of the useful semiconductors have relatively wide band gaps, hence they can be excited only by ultraviolet radiation, whose proportion in the solar spectrum is rather low (2) the photogenerated minority charge carriers in these semiconductors possess a high oxidative or reductive power to cause a rapid photocorrosion Both these disadvantages can be overcome by sensitization In this case, the light is not absorbed in the semiconductor phase, but in an organic or organometallic photoredox active molecule (sensitizer, S), whose excitation energy is lower than eg.

CIM is a conceptual information model for describing computing and business entities in Internet, enterprise, and service-provider environments. It provides a consistent definition and structure of data, using object-oriented techniques. The CIM includes expressions for common elements that must be clearly presented to management applications, like object classes, properties, methods, and associations, to name a few. CIM uses a set of terminology specific to the model and the principles of object-oriented programming. The standard language used to define elements of CIM is Managed Object Format (MOF).
